Dive | Alas Strait, Indonesia

This is one of the more newly discovered dive destinations.

It offers the perfect combination of easy accessibility and flourishing reefs, home to an abundance of sea creatures.

As with so many other places Jin stumbles upon, this one was highly recommended by one of her close travel buddies. Her voice had such conviction about how they operate and all the little things she saw underwater.

Alas Strait is the next perfect dive destination if you:

  • Are looking for a quick 3-day weekend. However, 4 days of diving would be recommended;

  • Are new to diving - excellent conditions and instructors for Open Water Course and Advanced Open Water Courses;

  • Or love macro-life and macro-photography.

When Jin first dived there early this year, she did not set any expectations and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the reefs, the variety of dive sites, and all the tiny little creatures. Normally, an automatic timer goes off in her head around the 20-minute mark due to sheer boredom, but for the first time in a very long time, these dive sites kept her attention for the entire 50 minutes. The reef was noisy and full of life, and the visibility was great.

With Kuta, Lombok, as your home base, Alas Strait is a 45-minute commute away. Your day will start at 07:00 and end at the dive shop around 16:00.

There are over 15 dive sites accessible, all with their little quirks and highlights, so you will not get bored. In between dives, you spend your dive interval in crystal clear bays or on white sand beaches, with a spectacular coastline iconic to Lombok.

Where is South Lombok:

South Lombok (Indonesia) is accessible by direct flight with Scoot, flying once a day, four days out of the week. Kuta Lombok is around a 30-minute drive from the airport, and we work with Mana Eco for our accommodation.

TIP: It is ideal to end your trip to Lombok on a Monday because it is the only day that Scoot offers an evening flight from Lombok to Singapore.

When Is the best time:

We recommend avoiding South Lombok only from November to March due to the Northeast Monsoon.

Family-friendly and for the Non-Divers:

Are you the only diver in the family? Don’t worry, please bring them along! Mana Eco has daily yoga classes, massages, and walking distance of the main strip of Kuta Lombok for restaurants. We can organize day trips: jungle trek to waterfalls, learn to surf, learn more about Sasak culture, island-hop for a day, and Jin’s personal favorite, a snorkel trip that supports the end of shark-finning in Lombok.
