Cycle | South Lombok, Indonesia

This is one of our favourite places in South East Asia.

We have been coming here for years, but Simon has only started bringing his road bike in the last few years. It turns out that it's cycling heaven!

There is virtually no traffic, smooth tarmac, a great mix of hills and flatter rides, the exhilarating sights and smells of everyday life in rural Indonesia, and stunning mountain, rice paddy, and sea views. In Simon’s opinion, there is even a contender for one of the best coastal roads in the world.

South Lombok is relatively little explored by cyclists, but the Etape du Tour Indonesia now uses some of these roads, and it is so good that Simon decided to spend a month in 2022 doing remote work and starting to map out some routes.

A mix of routes can be tailored depending on your skill level and your group's preference. Daily rides can range from 40 - 150km per day, with various flatter rides up to 2000m of ascent. One of the only concerns about riding in South Lombok is the heat, which means that it is in your favour to start before the sun rises.

Between Simon’s experience and expertise in road cycling and Jin’s obsession with spreadsheets and logistics, we have designed a convenient way for you to push your limits on the road to a stunning destination.

We are partnered with Selong Selo Resort (SSR) for our South Lombok road cycling adventures. SSR sits on top of a hill that overlooks Selong Balanak beach. Location-wise, it is ideal for accessing the routes Simon has mapped out. At the end of the day, a few places can be beaten by the sunsets from SSR.

Where is South Lombok:

South Lombok (Indonesia) is accessible by direct flight with Scoot, which operates once a day, four days a week. SSR is around 40 minute's drive from the airport, and once you are there, you are less than 15 minutes drive away from three white-sand beaches.

TIP: It is ideal to end your trip to Lombok on a Monday because it is the only day that Scoot offers an evening flight from Lombok to Singapore.

When Is the best time:

We recommend avoiding South Lombok from November to March due to the Northeast Monsoon.

The best months are between June and September, with 10 hours of sunlight and the fewest rainy days per month. Due to the southern hemisphere winter, July and August are also the coolest months in Lombok, making cycling less strenuous.

TIP: Logistically and fiscally speaking, the ideal group size for a road cycling trip to South Lombok is between 5 to 10 cyclists in order to split the cost of our all-inclusive support team.

Family-friendly and for the Non-cyclists:

Are you the only cyclist in the family? Don’t worry. Please bring them along, and we will set you up in a separate villa near the rest of your group. SSR has a kids' club, and Selong Belanak beach, about a 10-minute drive down the hill, is one of the best places to learn how to surf.

We can organise day trips: jungle treks to waterfalls, scuba diving in the Alas Strait, learning more about Sasak culture, cooking classes at SSR, and Jin’s personal favourite, a snorkel trip that supports the end of shark-finning in Lombok.
